Project Description:
Introducing Agile in a banking environment is a complex but highly rewarding process. Traditionally seen as hierarchical and slow-moving, banks are now turning to Agile methodologies to increase efficiency and adaptability. A prime example is SberBank’s Sbergile transformation, which inspired the business development bank to launch its own Agile journey.
Key Stages of Agile Implementation:
- Team and Strategy Formation: A cross-functional team was assembled to shape the Agile strategy. Two Agile squads were launched — one focused on omnichannel experience, the other on business process optimisation, with guidance from SberBank experts.
- Cultural Shift and Training: Agile adoption required a transformation in corporate culture, promoting greater autonomy, collaboration, and faster decision-making. Internal change agents and Agile coaches were introduced to support scaling efforts.
- Pilot Projects and Iterative Improvements: Pilot initiatives allowed for gradual Agile adoption with real-time feedback loops and performance metric tracking, enabling continuous improvement and adaptation.
- System and Process Integration: Integrating Agile into legacy systems required careful adjustments to ensure compatibility, data integrity, and security — aligning new practices with existing infrastructure.
- Scaling Agile Across the Bank: Following the success of initial pilots, Agile was expanded. What began with two teams has now grown to six Agile squads across various departments.
Challenges Faced:
- Shifting long-standing cultural norms
- Ensuring compliance with strict security regulations
- Navigating complex IT systems
Benefits Achieved:
- Faster iterations and delivery (improved Time-to-Market)
- Enhanced service quality
- Increased satisfaction among both clients and employees
Conclusion:
Agile implementation has proven to be a catalyst for increased efficiency, service excellence, and organisational adaptability. Early results show measurable improvements in delivery speed and overall performance — demonstrating that even highly regulated, traditional sectors like banking can thrive through agile transformation.
